So there was a presidential election, as promised, on May 25th. Billionaire candy magnate Petro Poroshenko winning in the first round. Gaining 54% of the vote, whilst the next nearest candidate had only 13%. A clear victory for the new president.
However, as Reuters, the BBC and CBC are reporting, all is not yet quiet on the Eastern Front. Insurgents have tried to capture Donetsk airport (the 2nd biggest in the country) and been repelled by Ukrainian troops with air-support. Reuters is reporting 50 insurgents dead, with no losses on the Ukrainian side.
Border guards have also reportedly stopped more people coming in with weapons.
And the Russian troops have yet to depart from the border with Eastern Ukraine.
So everything is still a long way from normal.
