Happy Canada Day!
If you need a refresh as to what Canada Day means, here is a presentation given to a group of Brits in 2020, whilst I was in Spain during the lockdown.
Was over 20 years ago that I became Canadian. Watching today’s ceremonies from Ottawa, gave me an update on the Citizenship Oath, which has changed a bit since my day. For one thing, Canada’s head of state is now a King instead of a Queen……
” I swear (or affirm)
That I will be faithful
And bear true allegiance
To His Majesty
King Charles the Third
King of Canada
His Heirs and Successors
And that I will faithfully observe
The laws of Canada
Including the Constitution
Which recognizes and affirms
The Aboriginal and treaty rights of
First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples
And fulfil my duties
As a Canadian citizen.”
And the national anthem is now always bi-lingual……
“O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all our hearts command.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Ou faire preuve d’amitié.
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”
Happy Canada Day everyone!
